Biography

Well before the DJ's of the same name from Japan made their mark on the world's ears, a group of gents from Hawaii actually found temselves on a stage in Neuburgring Germany performing infront of tens of thousands. Soul Flower was an alternative act fronted by German / American Sascha Bauml that hailed from the furthest spot in the world from Germany, the Island of Maui, Hawaii. The band had success with S.O.S, a song featured mainly on Radio Free America and the Armed Forces network throghout Europe in the late 1990's They drew their inspiration from guitarists like Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend and backed their riffs with fat bass lines. The drummer, Johnny Bam Bam Aitken was nearly a Bonham clone with a heavy 1980's L.A. rock power stroke, often referred to as Stadium Rock. Stevan Holt was the lead guitarist and the eldest in the band with a steady diet of classic rock riffs and a penchant for laying in harmony based fills that some claimed made it sound as if there was also a keyboard on stage somewhere. Bauml's vocals were powerful and thick and sung from a passionate belief that what he was doing was important. His guitarwork is nothing short of incendiary when he steps back form the mic and lays down cover fire. Never one to shy away from the lights, he gave the performance of a lifetime that misty cool day on the mainstage at Rock am Ring '98. Cameron Chang, the crazed Asian bassist hopped around the stage as if he were barefoot walking on coals. The band was the discovery of Marek Lieberberg himself. As a part time Maui resident, Mr. Lieberberg had a mansion in Wailea, Maui. He brought the mighty Bush to the island in late 1997 (November 15th) and chose local band SoulFlower to open for Gavin Rossdale and his band of English grungers. This was the last show of a three year tour for Bush. After Soulflower powered through their well received performance, over champagne backstage, Mr. Liebeberg turned to Jacky Jedlicki of MLK Productions and said, "Make these boys a spot on the mainstage for Rock am Ring and Rock im Park!" A record called One From Ten was leaked to the Armed Forces network in Europe and the rest, as they say, is history. We opened for Genesis, Bob Dylan, an awesome Biff Naked and fell in love with the Guano Apes. Polydor Hamburg and Mr. Lieberberg set up the band with showcase performances at the Saustall in Bernried in the zee where Soulflower was offered to sign, stay and record in Hamburg, tour Europe and go for it. In true artistic blurr, we chose to come home to Hawaii and live out our lives in the sun. But, maybe one day soon….
