Biography
SOUTHWICK is an up-and-coming band from Sofia, Bulgaria with a unique approach to modern day funk. Despite their relatively small combined age average, they have no fear of experimenting both in the studio and live on stage. The result is a freshly tailored quilt of vintage sounds. What sets them apart from their contemporary colleagues in the UK and the US is not only the latitude but also their understanding of an active FUNK formula: Flow Using Natural Knowledge. Having a keen ear and good understanding of various music genres allows them to strip down layers of sound to a single note, twist it and blend it into a parade of vibrating elements. Add a pinch of some Balkan-infused groove, and the picture is complete.
Almost immediately after its birth in the beginning of 2010, SOUTHWICK gained critical acclaim and started playing in leading venues - Swinging Hall, Soul In Da Hole, Radio Cafe, Studio 5, Sofia Live Club. Just one year old, the band has already played in front of the crowds of the 15th International Sofia Film Fest, the Plovdiv Art Festival “Otetz Paisii Street”, Trinity Farm Fest, as a warming-up act to Jazzie B and Soul II Soul performance in Plovdiv, during the internationally-renowned Spirit of Burgas in 2011, and many others. Two of the members, Bojidar Vasilev and Denis Popstoev, jammed alongside Poogie Bell band, Charles Mack, Li’Nard and Mark Bowers during their visits in Bulgaria.
SOUTHWICK’s debut single, “Pink Skies”, came out in the Fall of 2011 and was soon complemented by a visually pleasing video, directed by Dobrin Kashavelov. In the spring of 2012, the band is expected to release the anticipated second single and video “Nothing More” in collaboration with Ruth Koleva.
In November 2011 SOUTHWICK joined the “I Can Too” list of young artists in support of children in need. “I Can Too” is an initiative which utilizes media and culture events to raise funds in order to improve the inadequate living conditions for the children.
