Stephen Harper was a two piece metal band from Edmonton, Canada. Stephen Harper began as an alternative musical outlet for the duo after their previous bands had dissolved, with both looking to create music that was as equal parts harsh, heavy, and extreme, as well as experimental and filled with variety.
Stephen Harper's music combines various subgenres of metal music, such as sludge metal, black metal, grindcore, thrash metal, and industrial metal, as well as fusing various non-metal genres such as post-punk, noise rock, hardcore, shoegaze, and ambient electronics into the mix.
Song topics vary, recurring themes include political/social commentary, dark narratives, and personal emotional expression of human emotion such as anxiety, loneliness, depression, hopelessness, and suicide.
