Biography
Recorded over the course of a year in San Francisco, Ohlone is the debut album from Sunol.
The album’s seven songs feature a mix of West African instrumentation and percussion with new American folk songwriting and arrangements. Each song represents the soundtrack to a specific California locale, such as the Marin County headlands and Yosemite National Park.
Taking cues from late 1970s California classic rock, every song prominently features layered multipart harmonies. The album’s opening track, Save me a place, reimagines a song from Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk, trading acoustic guitars and drums for mbira, banjo, and drum machine.
The rest of the tracks range from the entirely acoustic closer, Oh well, featuring only guitar and banjo, to Camping, a song relying on heavily effected, layered mbira melodies.
