There are (at least) two groups called Supersister: a Dutch progressive rock band and a British girl group.
Supersister is a British girl band consisting of Eleanor Phillips, Louise Fudge, and Tina Peacock. They were active in the early 2000s, releasing chart-topping singles like "Coffee," "Shopping," and "Summer Gonna Come Again". After a period of inactivity, they are now reuniting and releasing their previously unreleased album, "Lip Service," alongside a new single, "Lock Your Boyfriends Up". They are also planning to perform at Mighty Hoopla in London in June 2025.
1. Supersister was an experimental rock band from The Hague, The Netherlands, active from 1968 to 1974 and again from 2019 onwards. They play a jazz-tinged brand of progressive rock. The classic line-up of the 1970s featured Robert Jan Stips (keyboards, vocals), Sacha van Geest (flute), Marco Vrolijk (drums) and Ron van Eck (bass).
The band started as a playful school band under the name Sweet OK Supersister in 1968, featuring singer and songwriter Rob Douw, who soon left the group. The remaining members continued as a more serious musical quartet under the name Supersister. Their style was Canterbury Scene-style prog rock, with a dominant Stips as the group's keyboard virtuoso.
Their début album, Present from Nancy (1970), spawned their first (and biggest) Dutch hit single, She Was Naked. After two more studio albums (1971's To The Highest Bidder and 1972's Pudding en Gisteren) both Van Geest and Vrolijk decided to quit.
The remaining members, together with newcomers Charly Mariano (wind instruments) and Herman van Boeyen (drums), released the album Iskander (1973), a jazz-rock concept album based on the life of Alexander the Great. In 1974 Stips and Van Geest re-united for an album (Spiral Staircase), released under the original band name, Sweet Okay Supersister. It turned out to be the group's swan song. Stips moved on to play keyboards in Golden Earring for nearly three years (1974-1976).
The classic 1970-1973 line-up reunited in 2000 for a performance at the Progfest in Los Angeles and a short tour of The Netherlands. To mark the occasion a rarities album was released: M.A.N. featured live and studio recordings from 1969-1973. The reunion abruptly came to an end when Sacha van Geest unexpectedly died in the summer of 2001. The reunion concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam was recorded and later released on CD (Supersisterious, 2001) and DVD ('Sweet OK Supersister', 2006), which also features several old and new documentaries, photographs and unreleased audio tracks.
2019 saw the surprise return of Supersister 'Projekt 2019', which was essentially Robert Jan Stips joined by a revolving roster of musical friends. The album Retsis Repus (2019) was a rather surprising return to form and led to the reformation of a proper Supersister line-up, featuring Stips, Leon Klaasse (drums) and Rinus Gerritsen (ex-bassist of Golden Earring). This line-up recorded a brand-new Supersister studio album, Nancy Never Knew, set for a March 2025 release and supported by a club tour of The Netherlands.
2. Supersister is a three-piece girl group from the United Kingdom. The three members: Eleanor Phillips, Louise Fudge and Tina Peacock released three singles in 2000 and 2001.
Their debut single, titled "Coffee" had reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart and was performed at G-A-Y along with Brian Dowling, who had sung the song often during the season 2 of Big Brother. The song is also well-known for being included in American YouTuber's DougDoug's Twitch streams. He had also bought the rights to the song.
Their second single, "Shopping" had reached number 36 on the UK Singles Chart, while their third single, "Summer Gonna Come Again" reached 51 and was performed at the BBC's Pop Factory.
The group then went on a hiatus, with potential reunions being planned since the mid-2010's. Finally, on 7 March 2025, their fourth single, "Lock Your Boyfriends Up" was released. Their fifth single "Catch A Dream" was released on 18 April that year, and their unreleased studio album "Lip Service" is scheduled to be released on 5 May of that year.
