Biography
“If we are forced to accept our evident lack of qualification, then there’s no danger that we will confuse God’s work with our own, or God’s glory with our own.” Madeleine L’Engle Tanya Godsey Nothing Less Than Everything There comes a point in our journey of faith where we are met with a moment of decision and the path we have traveled has led us to our own Red Sea. There we stand face to face with the oversized obstacle that lies in between ourselves and our ultimate destiny…to simply believe. This is the story of the human condition; of our struggle to get past ourselves and the promises that wait on the other side. It’s a theme and a challenge that is illustrated in the very life and music of Tanya Godsey and echoes throughout each song of her latest work Nothing Less Than Everything. For Godsey, who was raised in the Dallas area, the making of her album was a long but rewarding process. At the core of her artistry lies a love of story that is reflected in the sincerity and authenticity of her songwriting. She was given AGMA’s CCM Song of the Year for 2000 and has a unique way of merging and balancing vulnerability with unmistakable hope. Her varied influences range from Rich Mullins and Margaret Becker to the music of Bruce Hornsby and Patty Griffin all of which inspired Tanya toward genuine artistry. “Most of us could present God with a list of reasons why we think He can’t work in or through us.” Tanya explains. “I might be the first person in line to hand my list in if not for the overwhelming amount of times He’s proven Himself faithful and sufficient in spite of my inadequacy. “ But the journey towards accepting this life-changing conclusion was slow and gradual for this singer/songwriter. It began in Tanya’s childhood as she struggled to find a sense of self-worth and belonging. “The truth is that having a history of rejection and low-self esteem and the pain associated with those experiences are ultimately what drove me to musical expression” Tanya says. “I found a voice and a place within the creative realm that gave me a license to process and a place to heal.” It was through the experience of wrestling with these struggles that Tanya surrendered to the invitation to fully and wholly entrust her limitations to the sufficiency of a sovereign God. As Madeleine L’Engle puts it, “We are all asked to do more than we can do…We are all more than we know, and that wondrous reality, that wholeness, holiness, is there for all of us, not the qualified only.” And so this is the message Tanya Godsey communicates at churches, retreats and concerts; an encouragement to lay down our limitations and enter into the promise of freedom we experience only when we depend solely on Christ. www.tanyagodsey.com
