Heartthrob paved the path all great 2010s indie pop walked on. Classic album only 10 years after.

coming from someone who usually finds pop music really tedious, i like this album a lot. yeah it's super sugary and produced but the music is never repetitive or droning and the same tns charm is still on this album, which makes it so good. that being said it's still kind of awkward and i would say this album is mainly for fans only

Of course, "dated production" is not a good criticism in general, but with this album they wanted to break into mainstream, and sound of this album is not fresh enough to catch attention of people who follow pop music trends. I feel like they might write it off as something "uncool", so this album is kinda not really good for pop fans and not really good for indie fans. I like a lot of modern "nostalgic" 80s-like albums (but this one sounds more like something from 90s, imo) and I like a lot of lo-fi music too, but even interesting sound means (almost) nothing when there's no real standouts.

I'm not saying this is a good or bad album.. I agree with just mediocre though. But anyways, I'm on the side of allowing people to voice their opinions on something whether or not it's favorable. Soooo, if you are going to come with criticism... come correctly; in others words, saying something "just sucks" or "is bad because YOU SAY SO" is almost nearly retarded (could be forgiven for a tweenager, but anyone around 17 or older has no valid excuse for unsophisticated/immature prattling like that afaic). All that being said, I don't see how "dated production" is a very good argument. I mean, it seems plainly obvious they were going for some sort of 80s retro electro vibe, so it would follow that the tracks would be mixed in a way to recreate an atmosphere of that time. Unless you are meaning something else, that I'm just not getting, mlspirit? Also, I don't think it really sounds "commercial", mkdillon2008. But, I guess that is something open to interpretation.

Come on, this album is "bad" (well, actually just mediocre) not because someone doesn't like the style. It has weak songwriting and dated production compared to most (good) electropop albums of our times. I'm all for good pop music, but most songs on this album are not even memorable.

Just because you don't like the style doesn't mean it's "bad". The pop/melodic construction on all of these songs is brilliant. Best pop album of 2013. [2]

I've enjoyed the first half of th last album (Sainthood), interestingly Heartthrob is no different for me. Though if I had to pick the best cuts, Closer and Drove Me Wild are my favorites. Goodbye, Goodbye and I Was A Fool aren't too shabby, behind that is I'm Not Your Hero. The rest don't do much of anything for me.

I fucking love this album. I think all their albums are so great! I know they've changed, but still like them.

Whoever compared this album to Justin Bieber shouldn't be allowed to review music. Yeah, it may sound "commercial" or whatever, and I am NOT a stickler for bands that suddenly do that, but I feel like these ladies have the capacity to have done it with style and originality. "Now I'm All Messed Up" is my guilty pleasure jam and you all should get over it. Sorray!

I agree with most of you, I still don't like most of the tracks. They can do better music without trying to sound too commercial, but I'm kinda glad they made an accessible album for people who didn't know about them, so in the end I guess it's a good start point for non-fans of them (but it will never top any of their previous albums).

Every time i think about this album i get depressed. Tegan and Sara used to be IMO the most talented and fresh sounding band in indie rock. Sure they slowly became a bit more pop ut they never lost their roots.... until Heartthrob. This album was an utter betrayal of their entire style and fan base and, quite frankly, they should be ashamed to have sold out like this. The night this album was streamed for free online i listened to it eagerly, anticipating yet another great chapter in the history of one of my favorite bands. What i got instead was an entire album of overproduced synth pop garbage that sounded more at home on a katy perry or justin bieber album than anything i would expect Tegan and Sara to put out. I look back at their early work and see all of the amazing soulful indie rock they made and then look at Heartthrob and i can honestly say that it almost brings me to tears to see such wasted talent. very sad. i hope they come back to being what they were.

I don't remember their other albums sounding like Barbie Girl by Aqua. And there's not even anything as amazing/ridiculous as Barbie Girl on the album, it all just sort of sounds like it though. So, all I get is feeling trapped by the oppressive production and unfun pop.

Besides the polished production, I don't see how this is all that different from their other albums. Great album.

So they stopped playing great indie pop and are now playing great mainstream pop instead. Boo fucking hoo!

This album is growing on me. It's impossible to stay immune to twindies' charms, no matter what instrumentation they use. [2] Pretty much this.
