I. AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett
Not a group in the normal sense, the Texas Northside Kings are instead a group of hot young Austin-based guitarists and singers (Eve Mensees, Johnny Moeller, Mike Keller, Shawn Pittman, Seth Walker, Nick Curran) doing their thing in front of a veteran crackerjack band made up of drummer Willie Sampson, bassist Jeffery Plummer, organist and pianist Earl Gilliam, and sax legend Spot Barnett, and the result is a fun sampler of down-and-dirty contemporary electric Texas blues.

II. Want a taste of Austin's raucous Saturday night in a local blues bar? Check out this rollicking affair that teams a seasoned rhythm section of Cen-Tex veterans with a crop of young, third-generation Antone's players who'll soon be the keepers of the blues flame. Following in the ragged-but-right tradition of previous Dialtone releases, this session captures an unbridled spirit that too often gets glossed over in the production process. Drummer Willie Sampson, bassist Jeffery Plummer, and keyboardist Earl Gilliam lay the slippery foundation for youngblood guitar slingers and singers Eve Monsees, Johnny Moeller, Mike Keller, Shawn Pittman, Seth Walker, and Nick Curran. There are a few originals, but mostly the group covers obscure tunes by Magic Sam, Guitar Slim, and Howlin' Wolf. Monsees' instrumental salute to Bo Diddley, "Hawaiian Hound," stands out but could use more of Spot Barnett's growling saxophone. Nevertheless, tradition is in good hands here.

III.Dialtone Records documents the blues and gospel music that is being played around Texas today. With that in mind, this album is probably the most important on the label. The featured artists are the 3rd Generation of blues musicians and are the basis of the Austin Texas roots music scene that goes on every night. Supporting the young bloods is a solid rhythm quartet of older players from the postwar blues generation: Spot Barnett (saxophone), Earl Gilliam (keyboards), Jeffery Plummer (bass), Willie Sampson (drums).
Featured artists: Eve Monsees (who plays an Epiphone Riviera guitar), Mike Keller (Fender Telecaster), Johnny Moeller (Fender Stratocaster), Nick Curran (Gretch Duo Jet), Seth Walker (Gibson ES 150), Shawn Pittman (Fender Relic Stratocaster).
Tracks: Eve Monsees - You Belong To Me / Johnny Moeller - Radio Groove (instrumental) / Shawn Pittman - I Don't Need No Sugar Mama / Nick Curran - I'll Be Around / Seth Walker - I Hear You Knocking / Mike Keller - Red Hot Mama / Shawn Pittman - Call 'Em How I See Them / Seth Walker - Since I Fell For You / Eve Monsees - I Was Lookin' Back To See / Nick Curran - Slippin' And Slidin' / Johnny Moeller - I'm A Samplin' Man / Eve Monsees - Hawaiian Hound (instrumental) / Nick Curran - Oh Baby / Shawn Pittman - Reap What You Sow.
