Biography
There are two musical acts known as Artful Dodger:
1. Artful Dodger is a British R&B and UK garage group originating from Southampton, England. The group gained prominence in the late 1990s with a series of 2-step garage hits, most notably the single "Re-Rewind", featuring Craig David, which reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1999. The group originally consisted of producers Mark Hill and Pete Devereux. Following Devereux's departure before the release of the single "TwentyFourSeven", Hill continued using the Artful Dodger name, later working with MC Alistair and producer Dave Low. The name Artful Dodger was inspired by the character in Charles Dickens' novel "Oliver Twist". There have been claims that the name was previously used by a DJ named Lee Haynes, active on pirate radio, though these claims remain anecdotal.
2. Artful Dodger is an American power pop band formed in Fairfax, Virginia in 1973. The band's core songwriting was handled by guitarist Gary Herrewig, vocalist Billy Paliselli, and guitarist and vocalist Gary Cox. They released three albums on Columbia Records: a self-titled debut in 1975 featuring the songs "Wayside" and "Silver & Gold", "Honor Among Thieves" in 1976, and "Babes on Broadway" in 1977. A fourth album, "Rave On", was released by Ariola Records in 1980. Despite receiving critical praise, the band did not achieve commercial success and disbanded in 1982. The original lineup reunited for a performance at a Cleveland Agora anniversary concert in 2005.
