The Bahh band are a unique collective with an intriguing mix of influences ranging from Indian Classical music, the blues and post-rock.
Bahh have been delighting audiences over the last 3 years, in sessions and concerts in various venues in Ireland and across Europe. They recently made a lasting impression on crowds in the Body and Soul area at the Electric Picnic and supporting Kila.
The core members are Mattu on the sarode (a 25 stringed Indian lute), Ciro on tabla (the famous Indian hand drums), Tom Portman on dobro (slide guitar), Goisha on vocals, Pauly Smalls on double bass and Brian Fleming on bodhran and percussion.
Their performances are an enchanting mix of ancient ragas from India with a passionate and innovative interpretation of modern forms.
Biography
Bahh” is a Bengali word to express the inexpressible (literally means…"what words?) The group is an expansive collective of instrumentalists, percussionist and vocalists based in the West of Ireland.
Since their inception, they have gone from playing in yoga and meditation centres to boisterous trad sessions across Ireland, anarchist clubs in Italy, and recently mesmerizing audiences on the main stage in the Body and Soul area at Electric Picnic.
In 2009 they have also appeared at Dun Laogharie Festival of World Cultures, presented four rollicking supports for trad heroes, Kila and created an intimate tour of theatre venues in Galway, Mayo and Clare, transforming venues with Indian wall hangings and rare projections from outer space all accompanied by hot chai tea!!!
While the music has it’s roots in the Indian Classical tradition, the collective’s core members bring with them a range of influences and backgrounds. From the blues and roots of Tom Portman’s dobro, the jazz and groove inflections of Pauli Smalls’ double bass, the unerring pulse of Brian Fleming’s bodhran to the other worldy vocals of Goisha, the Bahh band really supports that old adage about sums and parts.
The band is in the process of working on their debut album with Simon O’Reily (who has produced albums with Ronan O Snodaigh and Luka Bloom). “…the influence of everything from Indian traditions, Irish history to Iron Butterfly incredibly diverse and immensely enjoyable…”
