The Barely Works was an eclectic British folk group that was begun in 1988 by former Boothill Foot-Tappers singer and banjoist Chris Thompson (born 19 March 1957), together with Richard Avison (born 9 July 1958) on trombone and vocals (ex-Happy End and Dead Can Dance), Sarah Allen (born 22 July 1964) on accordion/tin whistle/flutes (ex-Happy End and Di's New Outfit), Alison Jones (born 6 April 1965) on violin and vocals (ex-Di's New Outfit), Keith Moore on tuba (also a member of poet John Hegley's Popticians), Mat Fox (born 8 November 1956) on hammer dulcimer/percussion/vocals, and former Redskins drummer Paul Hookham the latter being replaced in 1990 by Tim Walmsley (born 29 March 1956) (ex-Happy End). Mat Fox left the group in early 1992, and Keith Moore was replaced by Alice Kinloch.
The band released three albums on the Cooking Vinyl label before splitting in 1993; The Big Beat (1990), Don't Mind Walking (Even if it Looks Like Rain) (1991), and Glow (1992) , plus a 'Best of' album (released in 1995).
