Biography
The Black Smock Band grew organically out of a circle of musicians that first came together in 2010. Musically their roots are deep within the traditions of English folk music, though they combine this with a range of influences from which they have developed their own unique style. This reflects the band's character; their socialist political identity, their beautiful beardy-gay sexuality and their broad musical backgrounds. In authentic folk fashion they sing about their own lives and the social changes they are living through. As well as writing their own material, traditional folk songs are adapted to emphasise their relevance to modern times with novel rhythmic styles and arrangements.
The band's live shows are an intoxicating and potent mix of styles and emotions, ranging from heart-breaking melancholic songs of lost love delivered to a rapt audience, to full-tilt raucous madness that brings people to their stamping feet to dance and shout along. Very much part of the experience, the audience are never just passive listeners and often form a strong connection with the musicians at Black Smock shows. All this has combined to produce some exhilarating nights at a few of London's famous venues including: Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, The Jamm in Brixton and Shoreditch Town Hall.
