Biography

"The Chanteymen" started as a fictitious band name Chris scrawled on the wall of the men's room in the Kraftbrau Brewery in his hometown of Kalamazoo, MI. Later, when Chris moved up to Marquette to go to school, he used his laptop and an acoustic guitar to record songs as a method of coping with depression and isolation. Occasionally, he shared them with friends, or just put them up on MySpace.

Chris began playing live solo shows in October of 2007. Jesse, who put on several of the shows, learned a mandolin part 10 minutes before stepping on stage for a song with him.
Emily joined at an outdoors open mic, again, learning the songs a scant 20 minutes before playing in front of people. This led to Emily, Jesse, and Nate Weber playing shows under The Chanteymen moniker.

Prior to a performance at the DeVos Art Museum, Chris, Emily, and Jesse were rehearsing, and bringing Rudy up to speed on the drums, as Nate moved to Portland. This took place in Emily and Anna's house, in the living room. Also in the living room that evening were Anna and Dan. Chris handed his 12-string to Dan, and a glockenspiel bellset to Anna.

Everything pretty much fell into place after that.
