Biography
The Chikatura is an auto-biographical musical project, founded in the spring of 2012, but rooted since early 2011. The sole founder of the band, Abdo Abou-Shelou is an Egyptian born, residing in the coastal city of Alexandria. Born in 1992, Abdo realized his vocal capabilities at a very young age whilst reciting Qur'an as a tradition, and excelled at it as the recitation required the use of the quarter tones and Oriental scales.
Much later, in 2008, Abdo took an intensive course of a 120 hours alongst 6 months in sound engineering and music production, but was not able to put real use of his academic knowledge until the August of 2010, before that, Abo-Shelou would go on solo concerts, with no bands, with just his vocals, a notebook full of lyrics, and a plain mic in a wide hall.
The Chikatura, derived from the Italian word "Acciaccatura", which is a type of a musical ornament (In music theory, which is written in Italian), it simply means, to add beautifying tones that add motion, notion to the original note, but doesn't change the melody nor add to the scale, only beautify it!
Considered as an auto-biography, it started out as a love story, a girl that gave Abdo that very name, Chikatura many of the Arabic vocalized tracks speak of romanticism (not to be mistaken with romantic or romance).
The main influences that got to Abou-Shelou were as follow: the Qur'an recitation at a very young age, listening to pop and alternative Middle-Eastern music until the age of puberty, and later on, completely taken over by Progressive Rock music, bands such as Diagonal, early Porcupine Tree records, dredg, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Birds and Buildings, Beardfish
