Biography

The members of The Green Zoo come from varied musical backgrounds. Members have played in punk, metal, psychobilly, indie and jam bands all across Idaho. Four of the six members currently play in Jazz ensembles, two members sing in choirs and all members of The Green Zoo compose music for various side projects. This eclectic palette of experiences and tastes gives the Green Zoo a unique sound. At times, The Green Zoo features lush orchestrations that toy with dissonance and strange sound textures. At other times, their songs are simplistic, raw nuggets of heavily distorted pop that aim to please the senses. The Green Zoo’s first album, “Crow Songs: An Auditory Exploration of Existential Themes” was the culmination of Thomas Newby’s (lead vocalist for the group) undergraduate education at The College of Idaho. The album is a conceptual piece that explores the ramifications of living in a post-god society. Without a godhead dictating what things are “good” and what things are “evil,” how does one decide what has value? Can anything have value in such a universe? “Crow Songs” addresses these questions with a collection of eleven tracks that include songs, noise experiments, sound collages and dialogues.
