Biography

The Gypsy Hot Club, inspired in part by the legendary Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grapelli - led Hot Club of France, were formed in March 2001. The passionate and uplifting music of European gypsies, coupled with a fusion of , and a mix of contemporary and original repertoire fired the band along.

Although ranging in age from 16 – 18, they are mature performers with youthful energy.

Not long after forming they were asked to play in a number of settings around the region and soon after that they found themselves on the stage of the Sydney Opera House where they have now played twice. Other highlights include performances at Woodford Folk Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival, National Museum of Australia and the National Folk Festival. At the National in 2002 they won the Chris Wendt award for musical excellence and they were invited back for the 2003 festival. This year they played to a crowd of 2,500 people at the largest venue – the Budawang.

They released their The Gypsy Hot Club EP in 2001, followed by the full length Reckless Indulgence in 2002, and Dragonfly Cafe in 2003.

They have been described as “awesome” by the wonderful band The Stiff Gins and have received praise from members of George, Andrew Clermont, Jigzag, Andy Busuttil and Mal Webb, to name a few.
