Biography
The Laconic, Marc Pelath, was born in Michigan City, IN, and currently resides in Chicago, IL. He studied physics and mathematics at Cambridge and the University of Chicago, before dropping out of graduate school to enter consulting. He currently works as a data scientist.
His musical path began with piano lessons as a child, after which he migrated to the bass guitar, and later, the Chapman Stick and Warr Guitar, never quite mastering any of them. In 2016, he began studying touch guitar in earnest with Markus Reuter, then experimenting with recording covers and then composing original songs, some of the results of which were assembled into the Derivatives demos and the EP Proofs. His first proper album, Integrals, was written in late 2011 and released in 2022, and consists of fully instrumental songs in an eclectic and evocative progressive rock style, with all instruments performed by him, with the exception of a solo by Reuter, who also mixed the album.
His second album, Amor Fati, was released in 2023 and continues the program of songs without words. Amor Fati features many guest musicians, including Gary Husband (Level 42, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea) on keyboards and Aralee Dorough (Houston Symphony Orchestra) on flute and piccolo.
Pelath's influences include Chris Squire (Yes), Trevor Rabin (Yes), Tony Banks (Genesis), and Donald Fagan (Steely Dan).
