Biography
There are more artists sharing the name The Naked. One is a modern day rock n roll band from Venice Beach, CA that is currently taking the US by storm. And the other is a Danish indie rock band. Read on to here about both.
1) Coming straight out of Venice Beach (via New England) is The Naked; Los Angeles' newest four piece proto-punk rock phenomenom. Starting as a cover band who rapidly progressed, The Naked's music takes you on a journey back to a time when bands just wanted to have fun. Mixing The Stooges (which they didn't realize they were doing) with all of their individual modern music influences (everything from jam to Beck) - they've produced their blend of rock n roll.
Sharing the frontman position between three (drummer Keith Roenke, bassist Mark Daviau, and rhythm guitarist Mark Sparling) isn't always the easiest, but it's part of The Naked's charm that got themselves a five-month long residency at The Kibitz Room – where members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns N’ Roses, among other now-famous acts, cut their teeth – that put themselves on the Hollywood map. Roenke, Daviau and Sparling are currently in the studio working on their forthcoming EP with lead guitarist Brendan Looney. Be on the lookout for that.
2) The Naked was a Danish indie rock band that existed from the end of the 1980's and disbanded in 1999. The band started out under the name Naked Lunch, later shortening the name to Naked, and finally as The Naked.
The band was formed by Kasper Andersen (vocal, guitar) and Jacob Als Thomsen (guitar), who met in high school. Andersen started out as drummer, but switched to guitar after Thomsen left temporarily to study at Durham University. At the time of the bands first album, Thomsen was back with Anders Reuss as third guitarist, Emil Landgreen on drums and Andreas Koch on bass. During the recording Landgreen left to join Speaker Bite Me and was replaced by Rene Thorny. Astrid Bruun Johansen, viola, joined after the second album.
The Naked introduced the experimental, noisy and distortion-ladden sound of then contemporary American and British indie rock to the Copenhagen music scene, inspired by the post-punk sounds of Sonic Youth, Swans, My Bloody Valentine and Loop. Later, the band turned to a more introverted style.
The second album, Pass Out, was produced by Chris Brokaw of Come and Codeine. The Naked supported Come on the band's tour of northern Europe in 1998. The grand old man of Danish rock, Steen Jørgensen of Sort Sol, also appeared as lead vocalist on a track of the band's 1997 EP, Some Kind Of Beautiful. In Copenhagen, the band opened for Mercury Rev and Smog among others.
