Biography
Upon listening to The New Governors' new album I am struck by their accuracy when they decribe their sound as 'songs without the fear of genre boundaries'; try as I might, I cannot place them into a specific category. This is almost disconcerting. there is something familiar yet foreign about listening tot heir music, although I was pre-warned - their website speaks of the ability to 'confuse' people with their sound. Michael Ricketts' voice has that Noel Gallagher tuneful yet accented voice - not as Northern though of course. A hint of Editors/Snow Patrol tones come across to me personally.
Whether powerful guitar riffs or more laid back strumming, Chris Mort's guitar playing leaves you in no doubt that he is a pro. jamie Palmer and Harry Mosley's actions on the bass and drums respectively consolidate this group as one that has a definite direction in its musical taste.
Despite the guitar riffs, The New Governors have an effortless feeling to their music; their influences are Radiohead, The Maccabees, Elbow and Smashing Pumpkins, all of which can be heard slightly in theirmusic, but their own sound prevails above those of others. Tracks such as the fast paced 'Cold Outside', catchy 'Loved Lost Generation', and attention grabbing opener 'Make Your Move' confirm that The New Governos are certainly makeing all the right moves.
