Biography
Whether throwing together small symphonies of sound or stripping down music to it’s core, The Phonecall has served as the main project and playground for teenage multi-instrumentalist/producer Mateo Suarez for nearly 5 years. Mixing together the larger-than-life sounds of bands such as Spiritualized with new age jam-band relaxation of Goose & Grateful Dead, and experimental rock calling to Sonic Youth. Other influences include: Talking Heads, David Bowie, Slint, Black Country, New Road, Khruangbin, and more. Releasing 4 LP’s from 2020 to 2021, these completely self-produced record’s brought the spirit of the basement DJ’s as wizards with the want-to-be prog rockers that gave him local attention amongst the growing music scene in the Chicago suburbs. After electing to take a break after 2021’s Swirl, he gathered a few loose musicians around in early 2022 to produce “The Watson Collective Project”. It was not long until the band was selling out local shows to play Phonecall songs with a larger, grandiose sound. Featuring horns, strings, background singers and more extras throughout a ever-revolving lineup with Mateo, drummer Joseph Yutzy and keyboardist Miles Toppen at the core of it all. By winter, a new album was confirmed to be deep in the works. With it featuring many of the same extra live musicians as the vibrant live shows did, while still being dominated by Mateo’s instrumentation & production. All as the band continues its experimental and innovative live shows.
