The Sinking Ships are the latest Holiday Flyer/California Oranges crew collaboration. The band features Katie Haley (vocals), Verna Brock (backing vocal, bass guitar, piano), twin brothers Ross (drums, backing vocal, trombone) and Matt Levine (guitars).
The Sinking Ships explore more traditional pop/rock territory than previous endeavors of the Sacramento crew and show some maturation and depth. The album serves as a showcase for Katie's angelic vocal, and Verna's creative harmonies and bass lines. The band is led by the dynamic pop duo of Ross & Matt, who help propel these songs along with delightful fluidity and speed. The wall to wall chiming guitar sound of Superchunk and Velocity Girl are stylistically balanced with the more classic modern rock sound of say The Bangles, The Pretenders and Matthew Sweet. Infectious, blue-sunshine pop. A winning combination!
The Sinking Ship's music, melodies and harmonies are written collectively by the group. These players are emerging from their other bands as individual talents in their own rite. You can hear how each member's individual strengths make The Sinking Ships work so well.
The Sinking Ships album was recorded mostly at Matt's home studio on Pro-tools, then finished at Inharmonic Studio, Sacramento with Engineer Eric Stenman who recorded Holiday Flyer's first two albums, Sweet and Sour EP, their 1998 EP Blue Harvest. Out of Key Harmony is a prime example of good friends working together to make great music. The Sinking Ships have made a brilliant pop record with infectious melodies. Listen and enjoy.
