The Sins of Thy Beloved was a death-doom and gothic metal band from Bryne, Norway, active primarily in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The band was formed in November 1996 by Glenn Morten Nordbø, Arild Christensen, and Stig Johansen. Originally called Purgatory, they changed their name shortly after formation. Vocalist Anita Auglend and bassist Ola Aarrestad joined soon thereafter, and the band recorded their first demo "All Alone" in early 1997.
Keyboardists Anders Thue and Ingfrid Stensland joined the group before the recording of their second demo, "Silent Pain", in January 1998. Violinist Pete Johansen contributed to the demo and later became a full-time member during the production of their debut album "Lake of Sorrow", released in 1998. The band toured in Europe following the album's release.
Their second album, "Perpetual Desolation", was released in 2000. During the subsequent tour, several key members — Anita Auglend, Anders Thue, and Ingfrid Stensland — left the band in 2001 due to the demands of touring. A live performance was released on CD and VHS in 2001 but saw limited distribution. Following the departure of these members, the band became inactive.
Although there were unconfirmed rumors in 2007 of a potential return by Auglend, it was later clarified in an interview with Pete Johansen that the band had officially disbanded in 2002. Johansen continued his musical career with contributions to other bands, including Tristania and Sirenia. In 2013, Anders Thue and Stig Johansen formed a new band, Savn, with vocalist Carmen Elise Espenæs from Midnattsol. In 2016, Arild Christensen formed the band Rainarea with Nelly Khosrovyan.
Musically, The Sins of Thy Beloved is known for blending death-doom elements with gothic metal, frequently drawing comparisons to bands like Tristania and early Theatre of Tragedy. Their style often featured a combination of female soprano vocals and male growls, a contrast sometimes referred to as "beauty and the beast" vocals. Their sound was characterized by the use of violins, particularly on the album "Lake of Sorrow", and while their studio work incorporated extensive arrangements and effects, their live performances leaned more toward traditional death metal.
