Biography
The Sloppy Horse is a folk rock band formed in Mahwah, New Jersey in 2005. The original lineup consisted of Dan Scarpa, Gary Wohl, and Todd Hamilton. Todd was kicked out of the group in 2006 and subsequently replaced by pianist Danny London. With this lineup the band played their first show in October 2006 at Ramapo College and released their only official album, Happy Holidays from the Sloppy Horse with Apologies to Louis Armstrong. Only ten copies were pressed and were given out by Dan Scarpa as Christmas presents. To this day he is the only member of the band who has heard the completed album.
In February 2007, Amanda Rudolph joined the band and shortly thereafter Gary quit. The band was dormant for awhile but resurfaced in the fall of 2007 with new members Shawn Ferguson and Ben Resnick. Resnick only played with the band for about a month but didn't officially quit for half a year. Around this time, the group filmed the first and only episode of The Sloppy Horse Show which aired on Ramapo College closed-circuit television. Only Dan, Danny, and Amanda participated and the show was eventually given a Rammy Award for "Worst Show". Dan and Danny also appeared on the RCTV Christmas Special, playing the role of misinformed Jewish stereotypes and performing their song Chanukkah Blues.
Many conflicts arose over the years of Amanda refusing to play bass. In 2008, Steve Carter was brought in as a bass player, but after the official departure of Ben Resnick, he moved to guitar. Dan and Steve performed at various open mic nights in the Bergen County area throughout the year. In September 2008, the Sloppy Horse played their second show, and first with the full band lineup of Scarpa, London, Rudolph, Ferguson, Carter, and guest member Adam Biener (of Sherazada) on bass at the Ramapo College Battle of the Bands, though they lost to The Front Bottoms. The band (the only consistent members being Dan Scarpa and Steve Carter) played a few more shows that year, including one with new member Mike Moss aka Mic Machete.
The future is uncertain for The Sloppy Horse. The one uniting factor of the band was that most of the members went to Ramapo College, but Danny London graduated in Spring of 2008 and Dan, Amanda, and Shawn will be graduating in Spring 2009. What this means for the band is unknown.
