Biography
Comprising John Waters (lead vocals, guitar), Richard Wall (bass, vocals) and George Decsy (drums), South London band The Stoat issued two singles, with November 1977 début 'Office Girl' followed eight months later by the Jam/Who-indebted double-sider 'Up to You' b/w 'Loving a Killer'.
Foolishly, the band dedicated the B-side to Mary Bell, who in 1968 had strangled two 10 year-old boys, and who was back in the tabloids after escaping from open prison. The publicity stunt backfired, with Record Mirror critic, Rosalind Russell, decrying the blatant attempt "to stir up some publicity… it makes me sick."
The Stoat then recorded a four-track John Peel Session for the BBC that, once again foolishly, failed to feature any of their four single sides.
