The Thought was a new wave band from Broek Op Langedijk, The Netherlands, that may be regarded as a continuation of 'new beat' outfit, The Rousers (1977-1981). The band existed from 1981 to 1986 and released three albums.
After the demise of The Rousers, band members Cock de Jong (guitar vocals), Wieb Zigtema (guitar, synths, vocals) and Jan de Jong (drums) formed The Thought in late 1981. Like The Rousers, the band was 60s influenced, but they added a dose of psychedelia and bombast: they were an instrumental 'transition band' from the poppy mod-like new wave sound of the early 1980s to the darker and more complex sounds of the later 1980s.
The Thought had an unexpected underground club hit in the United States with a cover of The Electric Prunes' I Had Too Much Dream Last Night, which gave the band a major label deal.
The band's first two albums, released in 1982 and 1984 respectively, were both self-titled and have therefore been tagged The Thought (1982) and The Thought (1984). Both LPs were released to critical acclaim and sold reasonably well in The Netherlands.
The band split up shortly after the release of third LP, The Dream Is Me (1986). Originally a three-piece, The Thought's definitive line-up was a five-piece, Rob Marienus (bass; another ex-The Rousers member) and Rob van Zandvoort (keyboards) the additional members.
Two former members of The Rousers and The Thought have passed away: Rob Marienus in 1990, Cock de Jong, after five years in The Shavers, in 2011.
