Biography
Julian Sutton (melodeon), Steve Tyler (hurdy-gurdy) and Anne Marie Summers (bagpipes) first got together in 1995 when they discovered a common interest in traditional European dance music. They went on to form The Wendigo, using the dance style from central France as a vehicle for their own compositions.
The music uses layers of instruments played in real time around a central melodic motif which is interwoven and passed between the instruments, building a sense of drama and interaction. There is a controlled wildness, energy channelled into vivacious performances. This is music which seems contemporary but also evokes something more deeply rooted and integral to our heritage. Although rooted in this tradition many of the pieces are self-writes inspired by past French sources rather than collected pieces.
