Biography
Operating from Westfield (as you might expect) just south of Bristol, The Westfield Mining Disaster were put together in 2006 by songwriter Paul Towler whose previous band The Haywains were veterans of the 'indie-pop' scene in the late 80's to early 90's and produced a lengthy back catalogue of records for labels such as Vinyl Japan, Elefant Records and Waaaaah!
The Westfield Mining Disaster aim to bring a fresh twist to the traditional indie-pop blueprint by adding influences such as alt-country and dark, brooding lyrics.
Drawing influences from true innovators such as the Velvet Underground and Orange Juice, The Westfield Mining Disaster hope to deliver a soulful antidote to today's creatively stifled 'indie' mainstream by offering romantic pop songs inspired by true stories, news-reel archives and, of course, good old fashioned love stories, marking a welcome return to a golden era when a song could tell a story - a time when the pop lyric had more to say than just parading loutish yobbishness.
Bassist Stew Black and Paul previously worked together in short-lived jangle-pop purveyors The Casswells who released one eponymously titled album for Vinyl Japan in 1997 before imploding shortly thereafter. Drummer Mike Barker also has roots in indie-pop through his previous band Cruiser.
The Westfield Mining Disaster released their debut 'Mary Jo, The Water's Rising' on Miami based Cloudberry Records in June 2007. The band are currently working on their second release, an EP entitled 'Everyone's So Spiteful In This Town' due for release in summer 2008.
