Three Cane Whale is a British multi-instrumental trio from Bristol playing acoustic miniatures which draw influence from folk and minimalist music. Each track is recorded in a different location and is both intricate and spare, evoking a diversity of landscapes, journeys and atmospheres.
The group comprises Alex Vann (mandolin, bowed psaltery, bouzouki, zither, banjo, etc), mandolinist with Spiro (Real World Records), Pete Judge (trumpet, harmonium, lyre, dulcitone, tenor horn, glockenspiel, etc), trumpeter with Get The Blessing (Naim Records), and Paul Bradley (acoustic guitar, miniature harp, tin whistle), one-man band for Fleur Darkin’s Dance Company.
The band's eponymous debut album was chosen by Cerys Matthews as one of her Top Five Modern Folk Albums, while their second album, Holts And Hovers, was fRoots Editor’s Choice Album of 2013, one of The Observer’s “Hidden Gems Of 2013”, and one of Acoustic Guitarist magazine’s 20 Essential Folk Albums.
The band’s third album, Palimpsest, was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, produced by Adrian Utley, and released on 15 January 2016.
