Sonically, Tono’s songs may recall the sentimentality of Jonathan Richman, the backbone of Pulp, or the ambitious angst of The Verlaines or Pavement, but his lyrics are unique to the present-day, crafting modern characters and a striking sense of place - whether that is the North or South Islands of New Zealand where he lives, or an imagined beyond.
