Biography
"Formed by Mike Adams and Josh White in May of 2008, the duo started out writing folk songs and soon sought out drummer Ben Straus. As many bands with synergy will say, "something just clicked," and here they are today with a modest but respectable catalog of about 14 songs. Their craftsmanship means not one song ever sounds like the one previous one and sees all members switching instruments throughout their set.
Toy Sails may have started out a folk idea, but alludes to the sounds of many bands–even if they don't realize it. Seeing them live last month, I heard everything from Vampire Weekend to Brand New to Paul Simon in a youthful blend that, though rough, was still well crafted enough to move my ears. The potential that exudes from this group–they've recently added another guitarist, Thayne Coleman–is what excited me most.
Don't let the trendy awkwardly-boyish look and choppy MySpace demos dissuade you from giving these young artists a chance. Their campy-to-thoughtful presence as songwriters proves they are willing to take risks already, rather than worry about what will win over a crowd or bunch of skinny girls with bad haircuts. The ability to harness creativity, all while allowing their songs to take on a natural state, is something few musicians are lucky to have so soon., especially while some are still in high school.
Toy Sails' youth lights the way to a hopeful future. They release an EP next month and hit the road early this fall." - Troy R. Wells "Naked City Magazine" July 2009
