Biography

Trip Effect is a blended mixture of raw acoustic rock combined with technical theory based playing to produce powerful music overflowing with feeling and emotion, and to also redefine any and all parameters outlining what acoustic music can be or how it should be utilized. This three piece band takes older notions pertaining to acoustic guitar and acoustic music in general and throws them out the …window. These guys demonstrate that acoustic music can throw down just as hard as anything else and Trip Effect’s music is the direct result of taking various underlying concepts stemming from other genres of music and applying those principles to creating songs within the framework of a hard driving, yet soulful acoustic sound. Trip Effect’s number one item on the agenda is to create music that pushes the boundaries of any preconceived ideas concerning acoustic music proving beyond any doubt, the realm of acoustic music has infinite range to rock out. The ideas and songs continue to evolve and take new life with a resulting metamorphosis of music that leaves a defined imprint on the soul of anyone within audible range.
Trip Effect was originally going to be a casual little recording project so singer/guitarist Derek Carley could have a decent copy of these acoustic tunes. As the songs began to take life and develop, it grew increasingly obvious that something special was happening and perhaps the casual recording project needed to be assessed in a different light. After a few weeks it was fully realized that this new acoustic music Derek had started to write in early 2011 was definitely in sincere need of being heard by true music lovers everywhere. A month later, by the end of August 2011, a new 3 member band called Trip Effect with an E.P. titled Second Life, had been wrenched forth into existence.
–The Players History–
Derek’s sound is a resultant mix of blending raw elemental playing mixed with precision ideas encompassing a full spectral range delivering solid profound musical expression. A Bachelor’s degree in music from The University of Colorado at Denver was acquired and utilized along with infinite opportunities to play with musicians covering all levels and experience. The drumming of Eric Colvin anchors the band and provides for a perfect base upon which to build the sound. His playing is solid from all perspectives, and while his technical ability constantly keeps the listener on their toes wondering what will come next, his flowing tightness of style sets him apart from the masses and gives Trip Effect that valuable ingredient needed for enormity of sound. Derek and Eric Colvin were introduced to each other when they both auditioned for another band back in 2003. Although that particular project didn’t lead to anything special musically, a solid friendship was established and over the next few years they jammed together off and on continually developing a feel for each other’s playing styles and eventually putting their two very unique styles together in a way to produce a sound not yet fully realized by society at large. Eric’s friend Aaron was brought on board to fill the missing bass slot and the lineup was set. Aaron brings to the table an entirely different perspective and sound with his solid bass lines, bring more depth to an already large sound. Aaron, being a Rockford native, has been playing guitar for more than half his life and was more than ready to dedicate every bit of his energy to the group after hearing only four of Derek's songs. After that fateful day there was no question in his mind what had to be done, regardless of where the project went. Aaron has a totally different taste in just about everything, especially music, from his band mates. Yet their entirely different influences is part of what helps them push the envelope as far as they do. Aaron, started learning guitar at a young age and since has picked up keyboard and bass. It just so happened he had gotten his first bass only a few months before the project began. With a background in theory, recording, and a few other small music projects, he had been playing solo acoustic shows on and off for some time. So the idea of an acoustically centered band certainly intrigued him enough to get him where he is today. Trip Effect is essentially in the infancy of its lifespan, and in the future will continue to evolve, create, write, and administer the driving messages saturating the essence of the music it plays.
