They were fucking 18-20 when they recorded this! Goddamn. Still the greatest metalcore album ever.

I miss when metalcore sounded like this. Instead of whatever it's become now, some kind of electronica chugging nonsense

"the last generation of new breed of metal" - the fuck is that supposed to mean? If I interpret it correctly, I call bullshit.

Never really listened to Trivium due to all of the hate they seem to get from so-called purists, but my coworker pushed me to start with this album, and it looks like they've got a new fan.

Good album in its own terms, but comparing two other albums it feels less focused, riffs for the sake of riffs attitude. Sometimes I just can't trace an idea behind some songs, because musically it feels like collection of riffs and nothing more.

For me some kind of edgy/dark look doesn't always seems to be emo or something like that and also I don't think that Vincent is emo guy ;p, so my profil picture means nothing in this topic ;). I still think that this album is in some moments too emo for me. Maybe it's because I'm a little bit more mature person and sometimes I want "something more/else" than just kido power and emotions in music. Don't get me wrong I'm not music maniac or guy with "better taste than other people", it's just my opinion :).

Thrashy at parts and very anthemic songs, but also a bit too "emo" in the vocal section. I do remember that emos loved Trivium back in 2005. I got into them when I saw them live on The Crusade tour, on which they almost exclusively played Crusade songs. This album is decent - good but flawed.

I just can't stand how much overrated this album is. When I heard chorus in "Like Light To The Flies" I just want to cut myself. It's just the most overrated album I heard for so long. And I also can't stand all of the cry and bitching about The Crusade and vocals on it. Let somebody compare for me any song from The Crusade to "Dying In Your Arms" in respect of VOCALS(cleans not scream). For me any song from The Crusade in respect of vocals sound 100000000x less gay than any on this.

Mm, I think the local gay pride parade has adopted Light to Flies as their marching song.

It's not about "LLtF" only. It's about whole album. For me The Crusade has more powerfull vocals than Ascendancy. I like a lot of riffs from this one but come on The Crusade and Shogun has better vocals than this. I just love Matt's Hetfield voice which sound a little bit like growl and I know that The Crusade has some boring moments but overall The Crusade>>>Ascendancy mainly because of vocal sections.

This album is fucking awesome. Riffs, vocals, leads, structures, production. Embers to Inferno was great, and this topped that, showing a lot of promise.... then a rapid decline. In Waves is the only album after this I like, as it was more in the direction of Ascendancy.

The threshold between Neo Thrash, Metalcore and MeloDeath is nearly invisible. Best album by Trivium. One of my top 5 albums of all time. [2]

Their best album, but not the best Metalcore album, that's Dead Man in Reno self titled.
