VICTIMOFDECEPTION (written as Victim of Deception before 2021) is a deathcore band from Tokyo, Japan. The band currently consists of vocalist Makito, guitarists Junpei (純平) and morby (もーびぃ), bassist Chappy (ちゃっぴー) and drummer kumao (熊雄).
The band's inception dates back to 2013, when it was formed under the name Kenshitai (験したい) by Junpei, Chappy, Kumao and two unnamed members. Originally, Chappy and the previous vocalist wanted to form a Bullet For My Valentine cover band. Then two members left and vocalist Daichi Shimoyama and guitarist Morby joined. Daichi was previously vocalist and guitarist in a technical death metal band, and after he joined, their musican direction changed from metalcore to deathcore.
In their early days before releasing their debut demo, they would create songs the day before the live performance, rehearse on the day of the show, and perform like that. Junpei has said that before the demo, the band was in such disarray that someone was almost quitting. After their demo, they started taking the band more seriously.
They released their debut free demo "Anti Creed" in April 2014. Despite being an entirely unknown band at the time, they quickly distributed 1000 demo copies, bringing back life to the Japanese deathcore scene that was tapering off. This bold move facilitated the band's expansion beyond Tokyo, captivating audiences in cities like Nagoya, Osaka, and Sendai.
Their EP "The Uprising Desolation" was released on October 14, 2015. This work exhibited even more brutality and aggression than its predecessor. All members of the band composed songs, and with their different musical backgrounds they got a large range of sounds in their music.
Starting from May 22, 2016 they released their debut single "Mastery of Misery" exclusively at their shows. The single was followed by the split EP "VoD vs LDD" with Last Day Dream was released on November 30, 2016.
The EP "Victim of Deception" was released on January 18, 2017. It was after this that the band got to support and share stages with internationally renowned acts such as Whitechapel, Chelsea Grin, Heaven Shall Burn, Obey The Brave, and more.
In a tragic turn of events, vocalist Daichi fell ill suddenly and passed away on October 28th 2017, only 25 years old. Amidst the grieving process, the band took a hiatus, postponing scheduled performances. A tribute show held on February 10, 2018, honored Daichi's legacy and served as a testament to his impact.
Reaffirming their resilience, VICTIMOFDECEPTION returned with the new vocalist Makito (formerly of Breathe My Words) on June 20, 2018. The subsequent release of the EP "Godless" on July 25, 2018, underscored the band's determination to persevere.
The trajectory of VICTIMOFDECEPTION's evolution was marked by a digital re-release of their inaugural demo "Anti Creed" on August 30, 2020. The band continued to enrich their discography with offerings such as the single "FALSE FAME" (October 10, 2021) and the digitally released single "THE 1874" (March 14, 2022), featuring remastered renditions of three previous tracks.
