Biography
The Virginia Gentlemen, the oldest acappella group at the University of Virginia, have been entertaining audiences since its founding in 1953. In its fifty-year history the group has performed nationally and internationally, offering acappella music in many different venues and musical styles. Originally an octet, which drew all of its members from the University Glee Club, the group sang some of the Glee Club's songs in its own performances. Over the years the group has grown and now consists of up to seventeen members drawn from the many different graduate and undergraduate schools of the University. The Virginia Gentlemen have been completely student-run since 1987 when it declared its independence from the Glee Club and the Music Department and became a Contracted Independent Organization. Since then the group has traveled extensively, visiting other colleges and cities around the world, including various U.S. cities as well as South and Central America, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe, and all the places in between. In addition, the group performs on and around grounds over 100 times each year.
