One of the album’s quietest songs, the NME’s Gavin Hayes characterised the piano-driven “Fool For You” as “an unexpectedly Beatles-esque pop ballad,” comparing it to “In My Life.” Zayn said of his classic Beatles inspiration for the track:

"I was listening to a lot of John Lennon the week I got that loop… And there was this one song I got addicted to, with Indian music at the front of it, sitar, and then it becomes, like, another song…"

"The song “Fool for You” started home studio. It was a bit in the mould of a classic Steve Wonder song. Later, I worked on the track on my own and came up with the lyrics “This love is tainted / I need you and I hate it / You’re caught between a dream / And a movie scene / In a way, you know what I mean… All in all, it took around eight months to finish that one track, but, as far as I was concerned, it was worth it: I was proud that I’d written it pretty much all by myself. I’d been listening to a lot of tracks by the Beatles when I was working on it. I had really got into some of their more psychedelic stuff, like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” from the 1967 album Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The piano chords at the start of “Fool for You,” and the guitars, were inspired by the Beatles' sound. That might strike some fans as weird, but I like to draw on the influence of all sorts of music and artists."
