Biography

Zulya And The Children of The Underground are a band based in Melbourne, Australia who release albums through Unstable Ape Records. Singer Zulya Kamalova is a Tartar by birth and released her first CD Journey Of Voice in 1997, which began a prolific career of adapting traditional Tatar folk music to a modern setting. Acclaim swelled after each release and culminating in a 4-month residency in the European World Music Charts for her first release with The Children Of The Underground, The Waltz of Loneliness in 2004. Most recently their album 3 Nights (2007) has capitalised on this success and sees Zulya singing in English for the first time. 3 Nights also earned the band an ARIA award for Best World Music Release in 2007.
Frequently touring Russia mid-year and Australia in the southern summer, Zulya And The Children Of The Underground are accomplished musicians (featuring Andrew Tanner on double bass, Anthony Schulz on accordion, Lucas Michalidis on guitar and Justin Marshall on percussion) who gain a 'gypsy' sound that seems timeless in it's evocation of places few have been.
