Biography
Black EL & Durkin are trying to inject some color into Boston hip-hop. Their debut project as a MC/producer duo, titled Color Commentary, is an expression of both artists’ eclectic tastes and personal struggles.
EL’s brand of lyricism is reminiscent of Rawkus Records in its hay day combined with the presence and bravado of a new generation of MCs. Durkin’s production fuses clever sample chops, hard edged electronic sounds and trunk-rattling drum breaks to compliment EL’s aggressive style.
The EP also features guest appearances from artists Outasight, Jelani the MC and Jon Hope. Color Commentary is the first installment of a new series of EPs from EL & Durk with color as their central theme.
EL met Durkin back in 2006 when Durkin was brought in to produce a handful of songs on EL’s first album, A Major Minority. The album, consigned by 2dopeboyz and illRoots, garnered over 80,000 downloads as well as positive reviews from respected websites like OkayPlayer, HipHopDX, and Myspace Music.
Since then the two have remained close friends and collaborators. They’ve rocked parties from Toronto to NYC with a dynamic live show where Durkin serves as both DJ and hype man.
Black EL & Durkin are just getting started. They’re looking forward to creating more innovative and genre bending music, gracing stages, and interacting with new fans. Stay tuned!
