"Marlene Dietrich" is the second track off of their sophomore album "Cavalcade", which depicts the story of German-born American actress Marie Magdalene “Marlene” Dietrich. The song features themes of bittersweet sorrow for the late actress as she hides her pain in her performance and how negative her performance was perceived by a crowd.
"Marlene Dietrich" also forms a jarring contrast with the previous track on Cavalcade, "John L", both musically and lyrically. Not only is it calm and soft where John L was aggressive and noisy, Marlene is presented as an opposite to John in several ways - for instance, her music is shown to be healing and soothing, whereas John's whipped the throng into frenzy.
