black midi’s breakthrough single, “bmbmbm”, sees lead vocalist Geordie Greep endlessly repeating praise about a woman who “moves with a purpose,” but never stating what that purpose is. Greep’s tone is sarcastic and his delivery is maniacal. He contrasts the woman he’s praising with other people he sees as self-serving but does not elaborate any further.
The lyrical style of the song can be considered “stream of consciousness” and is comparable to the writings of Gertrude Stein, such as her piece Picasso.
The song’s title is pronounced “boom boom boom” and refers to the thudding guitar throughout the song.
Live versions of “bmbmbm” sample Nikki Grahame from the 7th Series of the UK Edition of reality TV show Big Brother, which aired in 2006. She was known for her dramatic emotional meltdowns in the diary room.
The album version replaces this sample with a female vocalist fuming, wailing, and sputtering in incoherent rage.
