Sulane is JP Krein at his rawest, most emotional state. He’s often said that his performances on stage “aren’t performances, they’re more like watching me as I really am; no filters or reservations.”
JP has been playing music since the age of 8, and began playing in bands and writing music at the age of 12. Punk was always a big interest, partially because the song writing was simplistic, but it built the foundations that he would start his journey on. He played his first show at a venue called The Underground, alongside his bandmates from Nora Dates (who borrowed members from local scramz icons Treehouse and Knowing We’ll Never Grow Up). He has since played shows with a handful of other local acts, and has worked on an immense amount of other projects and solo acts.
JP started his solo career playing as an acoustic act called Her Luminaria in early 2013. He begun writing his first EP for this project shortly before deciding to part ways with Nora Dates, and started playing shows a few months later. He never fails to joke about how “I sound like a pre-pubescent Bob Dylan with cauterized vocal chords.” He released an EP, a full-length album, and a compilation album as Her Luminaria.
In an effort to grow his writing skills and improve on his playing and vocal techniques, he dropped the moniker Her Luminaria and began writing a 32 song album under the name The Stars and Two (which is in reference to a line from “The Book of the Law” by Aleister Crowley). The recording sessions were reduced to 26 tracks, and were recorded in the main studio and a few studio control rooms at the South City SLCC Campus over the course of 6 months. JP began to get frustrated by the time the recordings were taking, and decided to scrap everything that was recorded. A few of those tracks made it to his home studio and were released as an EP.
As an act to separate from a past of failed attempts, JP took a year hiatus from writing music so he could focus on his true musical aim. He was resurrected as Sulane, and released his first full-length called Neruons on April 12, 2017. Since then, he has recorded an acoustic EP called The Onyx Tapes (as a way to comprehend the continual loss around him at the time) and a darkwave/post-punk album called Ad Astra.
Ad Astra is Sulane at his peak. Every instrument on this album was played by JP (save for a few guitar parts, played by ex-Funkadelic and O’Jays member Dewey Adams). Dewey engineered Ad Astra, and helped create a safe environment to let the recordings bloom. JP mastered the album with feedback from Dewey. Every part of this album was created in his downtown SLC apartment, affectionately called The Gloom Room (which also doubles as Inkjar Collective’s workspace).
The progression of growth from JP’s first album under the moniker, In 1907, through current works (including works on his current side-project, Swift Omega) show that passion, desire, determination, and a lot of patience can pay off. Sulane may tackle a myriad of dark and heavy subjects, but the ultimate message JP wants to send to any listeners is that those who struggle are not alone and can make it through. The sun will always come up at some point.
