theHEAD formed in 2002, with a lineup of Ben Turley, Tom Taylor and Scott Herbert, sharing multi -instrumental and writing duties.
Their first album, Cubic Meters, garnered local critical acclaim in 2003.
One review in particular contains a great description of theHEAD’s style of music:
“There's a cross current of the Chicago school of post-rock (marimbas, synths and programmed beats weaving around each other), krautrock (clattering percussion and rolling basslines that lean towards a cool funk) and that lovely water-cooled Japanese texture. For the full picture, add occasional vocoder vocals and some odd samples.”
– Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/07/18/1058035190444.html).
In 2003, theHEAD played around Sydney and Melbourne, inviting along guests like SPOD, Eytan Messiah, Danny Heifetz & Clinton "Bär" McKinnon (Mr Bungle) . Airplay on JJJ, 3RRR & 2SER followed.
Ben Turley relocated to London in late 2003. In 2004, theHEAD released a radio-only single Hobo Atlas, featuring Eytan Messiah on MC style vocals. Hobo Atlas was played on 3RRR, 2SER and gained rotation airplay on FBi.
theHEAD has remained apparently quiet since 2004. Scott toured around the country playing synths in SPOD & Merle Morris, and Tom concentrated on solo material.
However, Scott and Tom never stopped continued writing and recording and re-recording theHEAD material. Ben has been delivering tasty bass lines back to base via the ‘net. The fruits of these labours are now finally being realised.
theHEAD have released a new 25 minute, 8 track EP – Butcher’s Paper for free download at http://derKopf.BandCamp.com
Butcher’s Paper is the entree, the main course is yet to come.
Recording for a new album is underway. Drum tracks were laid down by Danny Heifetz at Big Jesus Burger studios in October 2009, with the majority of instrumental tracks recorded in January 2010. Guest vocal recordings are next on the cards. The new, as yet untitled album is slated for release in the second half of 2010.
