Biography
Vicky Stuart is only eighteen, her voice is much older; it resonates with the oral tradition of English Folk music and Scottish Balladry, arching between Sandy Denny and Kate Bush, before gracefully touching down in 21st century Northamptonshire.
Sat between sound-checks, she speaks with a charmingly soft burr laced with girly giggles, which after a glass of Cider or two become hearty exclamations. She appears, as many young women who are just starting to make their way in the world: self conscious – all at once interpreting and evaluating her surroundings and her place within them. And whereas others might portray an air of indifference to combat a lack confidence, she simply looks, listens and exudes a natural warmth that banishes any potentially awkward moments.
She takes her place on stage for the sound-check; there are maybe, a dozen other people here: chatting away, quietly nursing a pint, a couple playing the fruit machine in the corner. She starts to pick out a song - evoking the sea in the distance, and then she sings; the air in the room changes – everyone has stopped what they are doing, saying or thinking about, and leans in a bit to listen, because this voice is real…
Any reservations Vicky Stuart may have about who she might be vanish instantly; everything about her is there, in her voice: the tremulous, richly dark, haunting and healing instrument she possesses. It’s not about where she is now, but when she can go, and where she will take you if you let her. When confronted with the how’s, why’s and where’s of all this she simply says: "I think basically, I just want to do what I love and for people to love what I do."
Great singers have the power to make us believe whatever it is they are trying to convey. Vicky Stuart is a great singer. Trying to qualify that statement would be akin to attempting to explain why we like certain songs more than others, or why we fall in love. She just is. There is no need to question, when listening is the answer.
