Biography
Xü Cheng is the talented Chinese maestro of sound and a member of Torturing Nurse. He is a photographer and sound artist. Born in Shanghai, 1980, Xü has been making sound art since 1999, in 2003, his works were included in China: the Sonic Avant-Garde, the first compilation of chinese sound art released by the California-based label Post-Concrete.
As a designer major (he graduated from the Dept. of Computer Art & Design in Dong Hua Univ.), Xü was once hailed by critic as "the outsider of sound art", his yet-to-be-released major works ("4-4", "My Livingspace", "Entrance", Untitled 2003", "Untitled 2004", etc.) bear a strong personal touch which sounds completely alien from other fellow sound artists in China. Rightnow Xü's main instrument for making music is a GUI-based synthesis/processing software named Analog Box.
In 2004 Xü has performed on the second 2pi Festival in Hangzhou and “A Tale of Three Cities” in Shanghai. In the latter event he played with Guilin musician Ronez (Zhou Pei) and Australian musician Hetleveiker. Xü's debut full-length album will be released by Threshold Production.
