I think the earliest Doom material is the main cause of d-beat vs. crust confusion. They mostly copied Discharge sound back then, nevertheless they were one of the main figures of late 80's UK crust punk scene (although in 90s they switched to more intense, proper 'crustcore' sound similar to ENT). D-beat hardcore is all about simple, laconic melodies with short slogan-like lyrics, while crust is a more complex, 'thicker' and thrashier variety, often saturated with slow metallic parts, borrowing a lot from Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. Bands specialized exclusively in this 'slowed down' variety are often called 'stenchcore' nowadays, while those who focus only on speed are regarded as 'crustcore' or 'crustgrind'. Over the years the border between d-beat and crust has become less noticeable though. Since 2000s it's basically all the same scene and melting pot: some bands sit somewhere between, and others are gravitating to one edge of the spectrum or another.
