Aman, is a word used for vocal improvisation, or interjected after a line of lyrics, by female singers in Turkish music and Greek music, rebetiko, in a style known as amanes. The word is derived from Arabic أمان amān meaning 'security, safety; peace; shelter, protection', and is used in singing to express deep longing. Its use in vocal improvisation is comparable to Arabic layālī.
Improvised Greek songs were typically called amán amán, which led to the name amanédhes or café-aman (καφέ-αμάν). Greek Musicians of this period included Marika Papagika, Rosa Eskenazi and Rita Abatzi. This period also brought in the Rebetiko movement, which had local Smyrnaic and Byzantine influences.
