Future house is a development of music that became popular in the mid-2010s. The genre is characterized by its use of metallic-sounding drops (mostly influenced by the plucky sound of old-school ), frequency-modulated basslines, while borrowing a rawer, dirtier sound from and keeping a tempo around 120-130 BPM, making it more energetic compared to contemporary deep house and .

The genre was started by Tchami to describe the tracks he was uploading on SoundCloud in 2013. Despite it being a "defiant joke", the term has stuck and was used to describe other artists making this kind of music. In the following year, Spinnin' Records became a major force pushing newly emerged future house. Oliver Heldens (who was even accused of copying Tchami's style) spawned massive success in then dominated EDM scene with Gecko and its follow-ups, as well as chart success with its vocal versions. Don Diablo was another pioneer of the genre, whose Spinnin' sublabel Hexagon later became the biggest future house label. Many other established EDM artists tried their hand at the genre months after it became popular and new, young artists like Curbi blew up in the scene with their own takes on future house.

In later years, some future house started to borrow more stylistic influences from various other genres, especially electro house, big room, , but also , or even in some cases, with artists such as Lucas & Steve and Zonderling representing newer sides of the genre. The evolution resulted in the emergence of , which heavily fuses the genre with and other earlier mentioned styles, abandoning its deep house roots in the process.
