Futurewave music, also called "newbreed", is a meta-genre made up of the many loosely related electronic so-called "micro genres" that arose from the internet in the 2010s. Subgenres include chillwave, glo-fi, seapunk, witch house, grave rave, gamewave, trillwave, vaporwave, future funk, future beats, ambient garage, oceangrunge, juke, footwork, aquacrunk, nu kawaii, and many others.
Futurewave is a coined phrase, invented to replace the term newbreed. The word didn't set well with many, but the concept was sound. Originating apparently from an entry in the last.fm wiki sometime in 2010, the concept was first described as such: "Upcoming genres of the 10s have something in common, something abstract, different in tactic and new in its anamorphic way, lets call it Newbreed. A coined term more than a specific genre, it is a classification of primary electronic/electro-acousitically made music , (but also new wave of all sorts) including (or influenced by) psychedelic, garage, chillwave, gothic, ambient, neo-classical, dream pop, lo-fi, new wave, witch house, chopped and screwed, juke, footwork, gucci goth, broken-clash, cold wave, avant-garde, nu gaze, seapunk, sissy bounce, zombie rave, aquacrunk, etheral, industrial, electro, shoegaze and many others."
