Kaneka is a musical genre and movement which began in New Caledonia in the 1980s. Kaneka music incorporates centuries-old traditional musical influences, combining it with sounds of contemporary music to create a wholly distinct genre. Often described as a fusion of Melanesian sounds with western influences, the style can integrate genres such as jazz, blues and, most notably, reggae.
