Man, people shit on this genre a lot, but I've always found it to be surprisingly good. Could just be nostalgia talking, but I've always liked Nu-metal. Korn, Linkin Park, Static-X, Slipknot, Tallah... so many good bands, and then you get to the more obscure ones like Orgy, Otep, and Nothingface. There's a lot of good songs, even if you have to dig deep.

Let's be honest: most nu metal haters came from the fanbase of long-established bands like Iron Maiden, Motörhead, or Judas Priest. They were simply frustrated that their heroes weren't getting the same attention they once had. On top of that, there was the almost obligatory rejection of hip-hop. That's how it was in my youth 25 years ago. I don't know how it is today, but I'd imagine things have calmed down quite a bit.

Imagine hating any genre. If ya don't like it, play something else. It's that simple.

No good bands? Seeded Crown, Tallah, DVSR, Headplate, Ill Nino, Reveille, Seo taiji, XIII, Wicked Playground, Juice, Superheist. Plus all the mainstream artists that everyone and their grandma know.

Most of the modern bands are just repeating the stuff that's already been done a million times within the genre, at least the little i've heard. Nothing interesting and original anymore, compare to all the biggest names in the genre, or Snot for example, they all had their own distinctive sound.

The Nu Metal era was definitely one of those "you had to be there" things in order to understand how huge it was. I went to Ozzfest in 02 and 03 and the vibe in that era was incredible. People of all ages came out and the music just felt larger than life. Mainstream Metal hasn't come close to captivating that amount of people since. It was a magical time. It was cvlt.

Nu metal definitely has some classics already. I always thought Reveille's Bleed the Sky album had among the most traditional metal elements that it seems like they were influenced by Death Angel and Dark Angel. Some i used to listen to back then like Korn and Limp Bizkit but got tired of. Mushroomhead, Mudvayne and Nothingface is pretty much been good throughout, though i think they're mostly alternative metal. Mushroomhead has some rap in their stuff early on. Mushroomhead I didn't know my first CD I bought was a compilation (XX), so I missed out on their early albums. I'll eventually get them lol. But everything i heard from them has been good. The same with Nothingface and sort of also haven't heard everything from Mudvayne either.

That's nonsense! I was born in 1983 and this genre exploded during my teenage years. Millennials: 1981-1996. Generation Z: 1997-2012. You're welcome.

I thought about it and after a while I realized that there is no such genre as nu metal. More precisely, this is the stage of the emergence of the modern bands in the second half of the 90s - early 00s, that played metal and gained popularity. For nu metal, drop D guitars and rap are not must-have things, because artists who moved away from the "old ideas" of metal combined this genre with funk, industrial, grunge and other genres, but such bands existed before famous Korn (Living Colours, Mr. Bungle / Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, Primus, Rage Against the Machine etc.). From now on, I prefer to call such bands alternative metal. Maybe someone would like to share their opinion on this matter. It will be interesting to know.

Interestingly, Wikipedia considers Nu (along with Funk and Rap) metal a subgenre of alt. metal.

Nu metal gets too much hate cause it's associated with bands like Limp Bizkit. If you look hard enough you might find some really good songs and bands in this genre.

i mean nu metal is good but there are so many better genres ngl. and before you call me an elitist, linkin park is one of my favorite bands of all time and wisconsin death trip by static-x is an awesome album. my top track of the last 7 days is by a nu metal band. the fanbase however is insufferable and a lot of nu metal bands sound like copies of each other

Nu Metal was the gateway for practically all of us who grew up in the 90s. Some of it has aged well, most of it has not.

Uhm, not really. I was born in 1983, and my gateways were "Appetite for Destruction" (Guns N' Roses) and "Master of Puppets" (Metallica). Those were my very first CDs, purchased with my first two allowances at the age of 6! That was in 1990. I didn't notice nu metal until I saw the music video for "Break Stuff" (Limp Bizkit) on TV – almost a decade later. But then again, I'm aware of the fact that you don't typically listen to thrash metal as a 6-year-old.

Actually only hated by 40 year olds fat mans, edgy adolescents who think they are "true metalheads" and hipsters.

I prefer "true metal" but still like nu metal. it's mainly angry groove metal mixed with rap. It may not be "true metal" as its different.

At the same time people think nu metal, metalcore/deathcore or whatever trend is considered "metal" that doesn't explore the rest of the metal styles out there. Yea, metalheads could be less hateful towards the "next trends" such as Babymetal, Spiritbox (haven't listened to them yet) but then there is a few people going around calling Sleep Token metal, even though there is very little to consider them metal. Few screams here and there.. a few djent/progressive metal in the background doesn't make them a metal band.

Yeah, didn't think of the grunge elements as I don't listen to it much but I agree with that.

Yeah, I would even say that all the hate was perfectly understandable back in the 90s. Music deviated too much from the 'averaged' metal canon, not to mention totally alien in fashion and background (Korn were never really affilated with neither hardcore nor metal scenes as such). And suddenly nu metal became extremely popular, crowding out 'true metal' from the attention of the younger audience. That was annoying. But that was twenty years ago...

You're right. As a teen I thought the guys in their 30s and 40s who hated Nu Metal and Metalcore were just cranky and bitter. Now as someone who turns 35 next year I can confirm anyone my age (or god forbid older) who hates those genres is cranky and bitter. The kids always know what's good.

To me, as a kid from the 90's and early 00's, nu metal, grunge and other adjacent genres sounded very 'modern' and unusual against the backdrop of older rock music. As if Queen, Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith, etc represented the music of a truly bygone era (even if it was only 10-20 years ago). Of course, now I know that nu metal and grunge had deep roots in the 80s, and this difference in perception is due to the fact that blues-based rock was popular for a long time, while the alternative rock and industrial rock scenes suddenly jumped ahead much later. And it becomes even more blurry when you consider the history of synthpop and EDM, drum-and-bass and so on. Still, it was quite unique time for kids inexperienced in music, as if experiencing a fracture between two different eras: older 'dad rock' times and new futuristic era with gloomier sounds and cyberpunk vibes of Fear Factory, Rammstein, Korn, etc. Have there ever been such drastic changes in mainstream (rock) aesthetics? Not sure.
