The musics of the pygmies of Central Africa (primarily the Central African Republic) are first and foremost vocal styles of music, using improvisation and counterpoint in polyphonic singing which, in terms of complexity, can be roughly equated to the levels reached by Western Classical Music in the 14th Century (despite the absence of any musical notation or formal musical training in Pygmy culture).
